As of September 2020 Google has permanently switched to Mobile-First indexing only.
How will this effect your older website that was made to be viewed primarily on a desktop computers, and what does it mean for your business?
What is Mobile-First Indexing, you ask?
In the simplest way; it is a way of collecting data from websites that are made to be viewed on mobile devices, such as phones and tablets.
Will our older Website be affected?
Yes. With over 70% of all world wide Website views coming from a mobile device, it is no surprise that Google stopped indexing desktop sites and is now focusing on mobile Websites only. This will have a huge effect on all of the older, desktop-focused websites out there - they will simply cease to exist.
Over time those Websites will eventually be removed form Google's search results and potential new customers searching for your products or services will not be able to find you, unless they are already aware of your company's existence.
How do I find out whether our Website has Mobile-Friendly design?
The easiest way to find out is to pull up your Website on your phone and see how it looks and feels. Does the page just flow naturally from top to bottom? Can you read everything without pinching the screen, or sliding it from side to side? A Mobile-Friendly Website design will look and feel good on any portable device, be it a smart phone or a tablet, regardless of the orientation you use it in.
If you answered "yes" to both of the questions above than your Website is Mobile-Friendly and you can stop worrying about your Website disappearing from Google's search results.
But what if our Website design is not Mobile-Friendly?
If your website was made more than five year ago, chances are that it may not be compatible with phones and tablets. Unfortunately, there isn't much you can do to convince Google to keep your Website indexed as this is an automated process. A complete overhaul of your Website is your only choice to make sure it stays in Google's index, and your products and services are being found by potential new customers.
